Why it's time for your business to go "social"

Why Must your Business go "Social"

Because I have been using social tools both to "do" business and to grow and market my business I believe it is a critical way forward, and yet almost every day and in many meetings I meet people that still just "don't get it".

They think of "social media" as Facebook and Twitter - but social is more than that - its about collaborating with the right people, at the right time to solve a business challenge of deliver a business opportunity. These people may be in your team, other teams, other divisions, other countries or even other organisations.

It's more about "Social Business"
Using social tools to do business, both internally and externally is the way forward. It really is about people and not technology.

To help with the business case look at this excellent description why social media can help in marketing and reaching customers...

Now think about how this could be used to harness ideas and innovation FOR your business if you could tap into the best brains in your network...

Problem solving is limited when all we do is work in silos, we need to learn to harness what humans are good at doing naturally.. collaborating. And that means in a transparent way.. with the values and culture of its for the benefit of the "whole" and not for individual gain.

The challenge for managers and HR is how do we encourage and reward this - and how if we identify our best collaborators are in the "wrong jobs" do we change the org to harness their innate abilities?

Hi Mike! Nice infographic - tells it like it is.  For me, the biggest opportunity definitely lives inhouse as it were - you cant be a social organisation on the outside of you are not social on the inside. You will fail to leverage the full potential of the organisation otherwise.  The trouble is that it cuts at the heart of existing leadership and management principles.  I dont believe you can move to be a fully social business with existing management and leadership principles and practices.  Long term the two are not compatible.  Being social and collaborative undermines the control dynamic which doesnt sit comfortably with most businesses.

It is coming though, and those companies that do "lift the lid on the watercooler conversation" and adapt to what it means will be the winners.

Thanks for posting and good to see you in here!
