There's been a lot of debate recently about why HR suffers from a poor image - including this excellent blog on XpertHR http://bit.ly/n0FD7C. But my question is,…Continue

But I didn't mean to be racist...

The concept of "intention and perception" and the related issue of "context" is one which has been brought to the forefront of debate recently by the Luis Suarez affair. For those who missed it, Suarez is a Uruguayan footballer playing for Liverpool, who was accused of racially abusing Patrice Evra, a French player for Manchester United. Suarez admitted describing Evra as a "negrito" but argued unsuccessfully that in Uruguay the term did not carry the racially charged overtones that it does in…See More

Isn't it the responsibility of every line manager to make sure their staff feel driven to lapse into roguish behaviour. That's what I hated about being responsible for HR - you got to clear up after line managers who, when the going got…

Haha, there do seem to be a lot of 'rouge employees' around? When IS HR going to get them under control?

Great points simon and a good scenario!  the move to 2 years for me is completely pointless.  I cant see any justification for it.  Basically if organisations got their act together around hiring and did a better job of that, and also…

I was being a little tongue in cheek - I think that your views are right and that HR should lead by example. My point is that being effective in business doesn't equate with "popularity" - we should be doing what is right (as in being…

@Simon.  I meant to add (in answer to your question) that it does matter.  Of course it does.  If we are serious about our profession it has to be something we can take pride in. Otherwise it is just corrosive to our well-being as we…

Ah.  This may set the tone for my membership of the group.  The CIPD is our professional body for gawd's sake - so we are working with a hand tied behind our back already. And a bit of lippy slapped on the face of HR as a makeover is…

Mr Osborne's Own Goal

Chancellor George Osborne has announced details today of the changes to the tribunal system, which will take effect from April 2012.  In a nutshell, these are:a)      The qualifying period for an unfair dismissal claim will rise from 1 to 2 years service (although there is no change to those areas which currently require no service to bring a claim, e.g. discrimination)b)      A fee for lodging a tribunal claim, which it is being suggested will be £250 with an additional fee of £1000 when the…See More

Don't blame us, it was a rogue employee

The Royal Liverpool Hospital’s recent embarrassing recruitment blunder, where “the usual Equal Opps employer rubbish” appeared on a job advert rather than the official Equal Opportunities statement, has provoked a variety of reactions. But what interested me was that the hospital responded by giving the standard PR message of “fully committed to equal opportunities, won awards for it, must have been a rogue…See More

Hi Simon   Good point, but i think the more we ponder things like our image, the worse it gets.  Im not sure about the Millwall approach!  But i dont think a makeover is the right answer - we have been trying that for years, the…

There's been a lot of debate recently about why HR suffers from a poor image - including this excellent blog on XpertHR http://bit.ly/n0FD7C. But my question is, does it matter? Should we be the "Millwall" profession (Fans of Millwall FC chant "Nobody likes us, we don't care") or should we be trying for an image makeover for the profession?See More
