Soup & Performance Feedback

A few weeks ago I purchased some soup for lunch. Unbeknownst to me, the act of eating this soup would provide me with a demonstration of the principles of a quality performance feedback system.I started of course by heating up the soup in the microwave, that's a non brainer! Once the soup was ready, I grabbed my fork and proceeded to return to my desk. (The eagle eyed amongst you may have already spotted my mistake!)So I'm back at my desk, sat down ready to eat my soup. I grab my fork and stick…See More

Are Graduates really unskilled?

One of the things that has been troubling me over the last few weeks has been the mounting Graduate unemployment figures within the United Kingdom. Well over a million Grads currently find themselves out of work and sadly a solution doesn’t seem to be anywhere in sight. I recently saw a survey which claimed that approximately 60% of UK business leaders don’t see Graduate job prospects improving in the near future.Whilst alarming in itself, even more concerning for me was the results of a recent…See More

The Future of Learning

I'm a big fan of TED talks. They are a constant source of not only inspiration but also motivation to continue to strive to do better. Quite often whilst listening to a talk, I'll see a link to my professional work. Two talks in particular stand out and they relate to how we approach 'Education' in the workplace. The first talk is by the Khan Academy's Salman Khan -…See More

It's a numbers game

I've had a few conversations in the last few days that have really reinforced the importance that numbers have in building HR's credibility and ensuring that we make a valuable contribution to our business. By numbers I'm referring primarily to accurate statistics and meaningful metrics.

Let's face it, business is a numbers game. Our CEO's are living and breathing numbers. Revenue; profit; EBITDA and growth forecasts to name but a few. If we really hope to influence and contribute to…
